Browsers for privacy: Brave, Firefox, Tor Browser

The ranking (worst to most private)

  1. Delete: Opera (68% owned by China's Kunlun Tech) and Yandex Browser (it sends your location, device details and search history; its own help page says "if you don't want to send this data, don't use Yandex Browser").
  2. Check the settings: Chrome and Edge (below).
  3. My picks: Brave and Firefox. Both block cross-site trackers by default.
  4. Most private: Tor Browser. Your traffic is encrypted three times and goes through three separate servers.

In Chrome

  • Encrypt your sync data with your own passphrase so Google can't read it: More (⋮) → Settings → You and Google → your account name → Encryption options at the bottom → use your own passphrase.
  • Stop Google from using your Chrome history for personalization: myaccount.google.com/activitycontrols/search → uncheck "Include Chrome history and activity from sites, apps, and devices that use Google services".

In Edge

  • Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Privacy → turn off the option that starts with "Allow Microsoft to save your browsing activity". It uses your history, favorites and the pages you view for ads, search, shopping and news.

Using Tor Browser

  • If you log in to your own accounts (Google, Instagram), that site knows it's you.
  • It can be slow. For everyday browsing, Brave or Firefox is enough.
